- A
pathologist specializes in laboratory
medicine. The primary role of pathologists
is to examine specimens of cells, tissue,
organs and body fluids in order to identify
diseases. The range of material examined
by pathologists includes microscopic
individual cells, portions of an organ,
entire organs or an entire body for
autopsy. In addition, pathologists provide
medical supervision to the clinical
laboratory, consultative services in
related clinical-pathological patient
care settings, and participate in research.
