BCMH HIRES NEW PEDIATRICIAN,
SHARON GILLILAND, M.D.

Sharon Gilliland, M,D., Pediatrician, has joined Scott R. Pynnonen, M.D., Todd V. Ingram, M.D., Alin Sora, M.D., and Nancy Herck, P.A. at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital Physician Group.
BCMH CEO, Tim Zwickey, stated, “I am very excited about the hiring of Dr. Gilliland. This is the first example of what this new healthcare facility means to the community! The brand new hospital/clinic, coupled with the beauty of the area, gives the ability far into the future to attract top notch, talented, award winning caregivers.” Zwickey added, “In the past it has been very difficult to interest any new physicians to come to L’Anse to practice medicine.”
Dr. Gilliland obtained her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1981 and her Doctor of Medicine from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis in 1985. She completed her medical and pediatric residencies at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in 1988. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, is a Fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics, in addition to serving as a Volunteer Associate Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Gilliland is married to Jimmy Cheek and has four adult sons and stepsons.
Dr. Gilliland has extensive experience in pediatrics and worked in various hospital employed settings around the greater Indianapolis metropolitan area after completing her education. She was employed with Healthnet Methodist Hospital in urban Indianapolis for seven years prior to entering into private practice for the last fifteen years. From 1997 to 1999, she worked on a part-time basis training pediatric residents with St. Vincent’s hospital. She has also served as a preceptor to medical students, pediatric nurse practitioner students, and occasionally pediatric or family practice residents at her private practice.
In 2010, Gilliland received the Summit Award for Excellence in Care from Managed Health Services and parent company Centene Corporation. The award honored Gilliland for demonstrating exemplary performance when following up with examinations and consultations after patients’ emergency room visits, providing routine preventive and well-care services for children and adults, and establishing a medical home for new enrollees in MHS healthcare, a statewide health plan in Indiana. Gilliland was recognized by Dr. Robert Baker, VP of Medical Affairs at MHS for the outstanding service and quality of care she provided to MHS members in the greater Indianapolis community and for her ongoing dedication to helping children live healthy lives.
BCMH Chief of Staff, Dr. Todd Ingram, remarked, “Dr. Gilliland is a very pleasant, seasoned pediatrician who fits in very well with the other physicians at our practice. She provides excellent care to our pediatric population.” He added, “We are very excited to have her and her husband, Jimmy, in our area and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to welcome them to Baraga County.”
Longtime BCMH physician, Dr. Scott Pynnonen, added, “The BCMH Physician Group is extremely pleased to have Sharon Gilliland, M.D. as our new pediatrician. Her past experience in private practice is extensive and she has excellent recommendations from her colleagues and coworkers. Her expertise has been well received and I feel she provides excellent pediatric care to our area’s patients."
Our area was a drawing point for Dr. Gilliland and her husband, Jimmy Cheek. They look forward to being in close proximity to Lake Superior and to enjoying the scenic beauty of the Upper Peninsula. They are currently residing in Tapiola.
“Jimmy and I are really excited about our move to the Upper Peninsula,” stated Gilliland. “I’ve lived in or near a big city for most of my adult life and I am really looking forward to living in a more rural environment. I am excited about being a part of the group of doctors at BCMH Physician Group. I had been a solo doctor for 15 years and am happy to have colleagues in the same building,” she added. “I'm also really impressed with my introduction to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Health Center and the people there. We chose to take this opportunity, both because of a sense of adventure and because of a desire to be part of a community with a less rushed lifestyle than the city environment we are used to,” Gilliland concluded.
Dr. Gilliland is now available for appointments at BCMH Physician Group. Appointments may be made with Dr. Gilliland ("Dr. Sherry") by calling 524-6118.
